Engagement Associate

On behalf of SMU DataArts, the Engagement Associate will support the programs team and the Manager of Strategic Engagement by communicating with and presenting to a wide range of our stakeholders: arts and cultural organizations, grantmakers, and field experts in research, advocacy, and arts policy. This position will deepen engagement with these stakeholders through creating and delivering in-person and virtual presentations and meetings, working to add value to their overall experience with DataArts and creating opportunities for collaboration.

This position will support the programs team's goals of providing value to all of our constituents who participate or partner with DataArts, and to create interest in the field for our products and services.

This position is based in Dallas, Texas.


Essential Functions

Support the work of SMU DataArts to deepen relationships with existing cultural communities and to expand throughout the country through education and engagement: 

  • Offer in-person and online educational training sessions, including webinars, conference and other in-person presentations; travel as necessary to deliver in-person trainings
  • Develop written, video, and presentation content to promote and support the usage of new and existing DataArts products; Create content for conference presentations and webinars in coordination with the programs team

Support the work of the Manager of Strategic Engagement to deepen existing relationships and expand into new communities by organizing and facilitating Cultural Data Networks and other engagement mechanisms:

  • Collaborate with local partners to schedule, plan, and facilitate meetings and programs; create meeting materials and maintain portfolio of agendas and notes; Collect and source relevant resources for meetings, including sample program ideas, relevant research and advocacy reports, case studies and examples of best practices; Conduct field research and outreach to interest new contacts in starting or joining new Cultural Data Networks or user groups
  • Participate in the development of DataArts products and serve on product development teams as assigned
  • Serve as a key ambassador and representative before a range of audiences, stakeholders, business/strategic partners, and funders, and report on feedback to the SMU DataArts staff; Identify and develop relationships with individuals and strategic partners for content development and/or delivery, including blogs, webinars, and lectures; work with communications team to implement a content calendar
  • Maintain working knowledge of best practices around data collection and use and field needs and trends in the arts sector at large; Maintain working knowledge of DataArts products, services, and research reports
  • The position requires frequent travel to deliver presentations


Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent is required. Bachelor’s degree is preferred.

A minimum of five years of work experience is required. Experience creating and delivering public presentations or other relevant public speaking experience is also required, preferably within the context of the arts field.


Knowledge and Skills:

Candidate must have experience organizing and facilitating meetings for groups of stakeholders (i.e. community meetings or other similar events), or other relevant community organizing experience. 

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal, relationship building and verbal communication skills to effectively interface with internal and external constituents in a diverse community. Must also demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in writing. A strong customer service orientation is essential. 

Candidate must demonstrate strong public speaking skills and the ability to deliver effective presentations to large and small audiences.

Candidate must possess strong organizational, planning and time-management skills to effectively and efficiently coordinate multiple projects, deliverables, and timelines. A strong focus on attention to detail and accuracy is essential. 

Candidate must have a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Suite. Experience with MS PowerPoint or other presentation software is required. Experience with vimeo is preferred. Experience with content management systems is desirable.
