Organization Overview

DataArts is a national nonprofit organization whose mission is to empower the nonprofit arts and cultural sector with high-quality data and resources to strengthen its vitality, performance, and public impact. We accomplish this by equipping arts and cultural organizations to collect, learn from, and use data effectively; by building critical infrastructure for the sector and being a trusted source of high-quality data and knowledge that advances cultural initiatives; and by convening and coordinating a national coalition for cultural data, dedicated to collective learning, leadership, and action.

Over the past twelve years, we have collected over 50,000 data profiles from more than 16,000 organizations, compiling one of the richest sources of longitudinal data on the financial, operational, and programmatic activities of nonprofit arts and cultural organizations in the United States. In the coming years, as DataArts continues to build this dataset, we seek to develop our research, analysis, and reporting capabilities, with an eye towards meeting the field’s evolving needs for quantitative and qualitative resources and insights and contributing new knowledge that will advance the arts and cultural sector. The Senior Manager, Research and Evaluation (Senior Research Manager) is a new position that will lead these efforts and will aid DataArts in developing new areas and approaches for standardized data collection for cultural nonprofits, grantmakers, and arts advocates, framing useful research questions, and identifying emerging areas of inquiry.

Position Overview

The Senior Research Manager is a new position, reporting to the Vice President, Director of Programs and Products, and will lead survey design, data analysis and interpretation, and delivery of the organization’s research services. This position offers a terrific opportunity to blend experience in advanced data fielding and analysis with a proven desire and ability to understand and communicate the meanings and implications of that data to a range of audiences. The Senior Research Manager will provide expertise in research design and sampling (including applied quantitative and qualitative methods), analyzing quantitative datasets (e.g., merging coding, and conducting a variety of statistical analyses); and providing thoughtful written and visual interpretations of the data. S/he will manage the ongoing review and improvement of our flagship survey, the Cultural Data Profile, and will manage the development and reporting of integrated field surveys conducted on behalf of national arts service organizations. The Senior Research Manager will also identify and forge strategic research partnerships that will connect DataArts with recognized experts in relevant areas of inquiry. With input from the senior leadership team, the Senior Research Manager will develop the organization’s research agenda, priorities, and service offerings to the field.

The Senior Research Manager will also oversee program and product evaluation and other internal learning initiatives as part of DataArts’ commitment to customer-centered value creation, continuous improvement, and data-informed decision-making.  S/he will provide direction and leadership to the DataArts research team (including full-time Research Manager and Research Associate, and part-time contracted Research Advisor and graduate research fellows and interns) in executing those priorities to meet the specific research and analysis needs of our clients, generate earned revenue from contracted studies, and advance the reputation of DataArts in the field.

The ideal candidate will have an identified area(s) of research interest, academic credibility, have worked in a research or consulting firm, and will also have a demonstrated knowledge of the cultural field and arts management.

Responsibilities

Research Services

  • Oversee the development and implementation of DataArts’s research agenda and contribute to increased knowledge for and about the arts and cultural sector by framing and exploring research questions and identifying emerging areas of inquiry.
  • Design surveys, research, and data analysis projects for DataArts’ proprietary uses and its fee-for-service client engagements (define objectives, identify research questions, design survey questionnaires & qualitative discussion guides, determine a sampling/recruiting plan, etc.) drawing on the DataArts dataset and other sources as appropriate;
  • Significant experience working with large, interlocking datasets (including data cleaning, weighting, statistical analysis using a broad range of techniques, and developing data outputs and data visualization);
  • Understanding of and experience with issues related to designing complex surveys, developing data collection methodologies and assessing data quality. Experience with methodology testing and working with Institutional Review Boards a plus.
  • Write research reports containing key findings, implications, and recommendations and present findings to clients or for field-wide and public dissemination;
  • Partner with Business Development to generate fee-for-service projects from existing and new clients to meet revenue goals.
  • Develop detailed proposals, work plans, schedules, project cost estimates, resource plans and status reports to scope, manage, and successfully complete research projects on time and on budget.

Evaluation and Survey Design

  • Develop, coordinate, centralize, and implement the ongoing evaluation of DataArts’ products, services, and operational efficiency for internal learning and external reporting to funders; make recommendations to senior management for changes as appropriate.
  • Conduct an annual evaluation of the Cultural Data Profile, identify unused and commonly misinterpreted fields. Analyze CDP-specific user feedback and make limited edits to the survey instrument as indicated.
  • Oversee the development and integration of third-party surveys/questions administered on the DataArts platform to ensure efficient, streamlined data collection and the integrity of the datasets.
  • Work with stakeholders and field experts to refine and bring to scale DataArts’ demographic data collection methodologies and services.

Thought Leadership and Networks of Influence

  • Provide intellectual leadership and strengthen DataArts expertise and credibility by being an active part of the national dialogue about issues, trends, and emerging practices—including writing articles and papers for publication, making conference presentations, and contributing to DataArts’ website and social media platforms.
  • Forge and facilitate strategic relationships with research and data partners to support field-wide data standards and create new opportunities for collaborative data-driven initiatives, products, and services.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D., terminal degree, or equivalent professional experience in a research, social science, or policy-related field (i.e. non-profit administration, arts management, urban planning, economics, anthropology, sociology, political science, demography, etc.)
  • Extensive experience (i.e. at least 10 years) in quantitative and/or qualitative research and evaluation methods and proven facility with SPSS. Experience with GIS and data visualization techniques a plus.
  • Familiarity with arts and culture sector’s major research initiatives
  • Strong written and verbal skills are required with the proven ability to derive and communicate meaningful, actionable insights from data and to make complex information clear. 
  • Demonstrated area of research interest with a record of scholarly publications and interactions with arts-related policy or issues.
  • Experience in a research or consulting firm managing multiple client projects is desired and a strong interest in actively engaging in securing and completing revenue-generating research projects (grant supported or fee-for-service) is a must.
  • Ability to build consensus, develop networks, and maintain relationships across a diverse range of stakeholders on often complex, intellectually challenging, conflicting and/or ambiguous issues.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and intellectual generosity are essential, with the ability to interact with diverse internal and external clients, many of whom may have only limited formal research expertise.
